It all began in the 6th grade, when I first started getting migraines about once a month. I was 11 or 12 years old. I remember my mother saying that whenever I would get these headaches that my face would turn pale. I also remember that getting these headaches meant I could look forward to being sensitive to light and sound all day. It robbed me of all my energy.

As I got older, transitioning into high school, the migraines got worse and more frequent. By the time I reached my senior year in high school, I was getting one every other week. I had seen a few different doctors, each diagnosing me and prescribing me with a different medication. As the years progressed, some of the drugs helped, but none ever quite did the trick.

In my early 20’s, I went to school part-time and worked. I was fortunate enough to have a job with good benefits. I was already conditioned to know that I would waste half the day at the doctors office to try a new prescription that might be “that one” to do the trick. Focusing on earning more money (as we do when we’re younger), it was just as effective to live off of extra strength Tylenol and Ibuprofen.

Eventually I got engaged (age 27) and I wanted to start my “new life” off right. I made an appointment to see the doctor. After 5 months, 6 prescriptions, 2 appointments with a neurologist, 1 nurse-administered shot into my neck and a pocket full of free trial drugs- I was still getting migraine headaches as frequently as 2-3x a week. I was taking one prescription after another chasing the symptoms caused by the drug before it.

Adding to matters, I was furious to learn that a side effect of the 6th and latest prescription was “migraine headaches”. The doctor concluded that we steer away from that last drug and try something new, an antidepressant.

I came home with my 7th prescription (unfilled), hopeful that this was “the one”. Marissa was against the idea of her 28 year-old husband being on psychiatric medications, especially one that would alter my character. She suggested that we try something else.

Desperate to try anything, I tried acupuncture. After only a couple of visits, we learned that my insurance would not cover it. As fate had it, the acupuncturist shared an office with a chiropractor, and he took my insurance.

The chiropractor preformed an exam, x-ray and analysis and seemed confident he could help. He noted a misalignment of my head on my neck, and commented how young I was to be on all these drugs. He recommended we tried 8 weeks of care, as we’d see progress or not by then. Skeptically, with nothing to lose, I was desperate. I was willing to try anything.

By the end of care, I went from 2-3 migraines a week , down to 1 headache in 3 weeks. I knew this was the answer. I told my wife that I wanted to help others through chiropractic. This was what I felt I was meant to do. Who even knew this stuff was an option? She encouraged me to pursue it, so I did.

6 years later (and virtually migraine-free) I enter my last year of Grad school with a burning desire to share this with the world. Our bodies already possess an ability to restore health when it’s uninhibited, as we have for generations.
